December is one of the most atmospheric times to visit Krakow. Christmas lights, the decorated Main Market Square and the winter charm of the Old Town give the city a completely different character from the rest of the year.
It is also a great time for a short city break. You can explore Krakow’s most important landmarks without the summer heat and easily combine sightseeing with museums, concerts, excellent food and evenings in the historic city centre.
What are the best things to see and do in Krakow in December?
Experience the Main Market Square at Christmas
The Main Market Square is a natural starting point for exploring Krakow in December. Christmas decorations, festive lights and the traditional Christmas tree create a unique setting for the Cloth Hall, St. Mary’s Basilica and the historic townhouses surrounding the square.
It is worth seeing the Main Market Square both during the day and after dark. In the evening, the illuminations completely transform its atmosphere, so even if you pass through the square several times during your stay, make sure to return after sunset.
This is also where the Krakow Christmas Market takes place. If the market is one of the main reasons for your visit, read our guide to the Krakow Christmas Market.
Walk the Royal Route to Wawel
A December walk through Krakow is a perfect opportunity to follow one of the city’s most historic routes. Starting at St. Florian’s Gate, the Royal Route leads along Floriańska Street to the Main Market Square and then continues along Grodzka Street towards Wawel.
Along the way, you will see some of the most important landmarks of the Old Town, historic townhouses and beautiful churches. The walk itself is free and offers an excellent introduction to Krakow’s historic centre.
At Wawel, visit the Renaissance courtyard of Wawel Royal Castle and the cathedral. If the weather is not ideal for a long walk, you can also choose one of the castle’s indoor exhibitions.
Discover Kazimierz in winter
Kazimierz has a very different character from the elegant surroundings of the Main Market Square. Krakow’s historic Jewish quarter is known for its heritage, narrow streets, cafés, restaurants and places connected with the history of the city’s Jewish community.
Walk along Szeroka Street, explore the atmospheric streets around Józefa and Miodowa, and visit Plac Nowy. In winter, Kazimierz is particularly well suited to combining shorter walks with stops at cafés, restaurants and museums.
Kazimierz is around a 20-minute walk from the Main Market Square.
Make time for Krakow’s museums
December weather can be unpredictable, so it is worth including some indoor attractions in your itinerary. Krakow offers plenty of options.
Places worth considering include Wawel Royal Castle, the National Museum in Krakow, the Rynek Underground Museum, Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory and MOCAK – the Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow.
There is no need to try to see everything during one stay. Visiting one or two museums a day will leave you enough time for walks and spontaneous discoveries around the city.
See Krakow from above
If the weather is good, it is worth seeing winter in Krakow from a different perspective. Kościuszko Mound is one of the city’s best viewpoints, offering panoramic views of Krakow and, in good conditions, the surrounding area.
Another option is a walk around Wawel and along the Vistula Boulevards. They are much quieter in winter than during the summer season and offer a welcome break from the busiest parts of the Old Town.
Before heading to a viewpoint, check the weather conditions – December fog and low clouds can significantly reduce visibility.
Spend an evening in the centre of Krakow
Krakow is particularly beautiful after dark in December. The Christmas lights of the Old Town and the illuminated Cloth Hall and St. Mary’s Basilica create a completely different atmosphere from the daytime.
After an evening walk, you can attend a concert or performance or simply enjoy a relaxed dinner in the city centre. Guests of The Bonerowski Palace can also end the day at Amalia Restaurant, located within the hotel.
Thanks to the hotel’s location directly on the Main Market Square, an evening stroll requires no transport – many of the most important places in Krakow’s historic centre are only a few minutes away on foot.
What if you are visiting Krakow for Christmas?
December is about more than the Christmas market and the weeks leading up to the holidays. During Christmas itself, the city takes on an even more distinctive atmosphere, while the opening hours of some museums, restaurants and attractions may change.

What is the weather like in Krakow in December?
December in Krakow is cold and the weather can change quickly. You may experience snowy winter days, but temperatures above freezing, rain and fog are also possible. The days are short, so it is best to start outdoor sightseeing in the morning.
Bring a warm jacket and comfortable, water-resistant shoes, and plan your itinerary so that outdoor walks are mixed with indoor sightseeing, museum visits and breaks in cafés.
How many days do you need in Krakow in December?
For a first visit, two or three days is a good choice. This gives you enough time to explore the Main Market Square and Old Town, Wawel and Kazimierz, visit a museum and still enjoy the Christmas market and evening walks.
If you only have one day, follow our One Day in Krakow itinerary, which takes you through the most important sights in the city centre.
For a longer stay, you can also plan a trip outside the city centre – for example to the Wieliczka Salt Mine or other attractions around Krakow.
